- Terraformation’s seed bank technology will help Eden Reforestation Projects restore biodiverse forests responsibly and at scale in East Africa, marking Terraformation’s latest new partnership
- Terraformation’s global partners now span 10 countries across five continents and have created nearly 400 jobs, planted over 350,000 biodiverse trees and plants, and stored over 8 million seeds
WAIMEA, HAIWAI'I (SEPTEMBER 12, 2022)— Terraformation, the global forest accelerator, and Eden Reforestation Projects, the world’s largest nonprofit restoration organization, are today announcing a new partnership which will create storage for up to 50 million seeds in East Africa. The partnership, which is engaging local communities on the ground, spans several projects in Kenya and Mozambique, enabling both organizations to restore landscapes responsibly and at scale.
Built upon a shared belief of landscape restoration representing the most efficient and immediate method of carbon capture, the partnership will utilize Terraformation’s seed banking technology and facilitate sustainable and biodiverse restoration, with nearly 160 different species of trees being planted.
The Matathia nursery site near Nairobi in Kenya currently supports 10 different project sites, many of which provide habitat for wildlife like elephants, leopards, cape buffalo, primates and porcupines — along with countless species of birds, insects and amphibians. They also support local people, who rely on the ecosystems for food and fresh water.
Eden is the latest organization to partner with Terraformation in order to accelerate global reforestation efforts. Other recent projects include:

Eden is the latest organization to partner with Terraformation in order to accelerate global reforestation efforts. Other recent projects include:
- My Forest Armenia, where Terraformation has supported the planting of 180,000 native trees within the Lori region in the Republic of Armenia. With more than 3,500 plant species, Armenia is considered a biodiversity hotspot — but decades of deforestation have reduced its tree cover to just 11%. The team has plans to plant up to 5,000 hectares.
- Terraformation’s partnership with Saving Africa’s Nature (SANA), which is working to reforest 26 hectares in Tanzania’s Kikwati wildlife corridor, restoring a critical ecosystem for animals and humans alike. The movement of elephants, buffalo and other animal species within this corridor supports the region’s entire ecosystem — but due to increased human activities, this ecosystem is now under threat.
- Regenerative Resources, which is working to reforest 240 hectares in the Songhor Lagoon and Keta regions of Ghana, where climate change and sea level rise threaten to devastate mangrove habitats. Terraformation has supported the organization in establishing two native tree nurseries and planting 60,000 trees, with the goal of planting 200,000 in total.
Terraformation’s global network of partners has now reached 14 projects in 10 countries, creating nearly 400 jobs worldwide. To date, Terraformation has planted over 350,000 biodiverse trees and plants, and stored over 8 million seeds.
Andrew Kinzer, Eden’s International Director, Africa Area, said: “Having a reliable, high-quality seed source is critical to large-scale landscape restoration. Working with Terraformation will be a game-changer for our ability to scale effectively and efficiently.”
Yee Lee, VP of Growth, Terraformation, said: “Tackling the climate and nature crises is one of the greatest challenges of our time and is always going to be a collaborative effort. Only by working together can we achieve our goals, and we’re delighted to have partnered with Eden and so many like-minded organizations to get trees in the ground as quickly — and responsibly — as possible.
“While our mission is a global one, a crucial part of our work is in identifying key areas and projects requiring support. There is huge reforestation potential in East Africa, and we hope our work with Eden will make a real difference.”
